About the Author

Now retired, Peggy Bushy formerly worked in the field of religious education. She has a BA in psychology as well as an MS in education and allied professions. When her mother developed Lewy body dementia, she found a distinct lack of knowledge and support from the medical community. Hoping to provide this support for others, she was inspired to write Lewy, Mom, and Me. Bushy is the mother of three and the grandmother of four, with her fifth on the way, and she lives on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, with her husband, Tom.

Lewy, Mom and Me: A Caregiver's Story is a fascinating story of Peggy Bushy's mother's descent into Lewy body dementia, which although common is not well understood. We learn about the family's early life growing up in a warm Italian community. Peggy leads us through the shocking changes that her mother gradually undergoes. Francesca becomes involved with her hallucinations -- seeing people in her home that aren't there and believing someone is out to kill her. Yet, amazingly, she continues living a somewhat normal life, traveling back and forth from New England to her winter home in Florida. For Peggy, one of the biggest challenges of Lewy body dementia was that within the course a day her mother could spiral from competent, kind and loving into insanity. I was gripped by this story of caregiving and felt so much admiration for the author and how she persevered in caring for her mother through incredibly difficult circumstances. An inspiring read!

I read the book in a day, but took my time to review. Mainly because I know almost everyone in the book, as I grew up in the wonderful town where Francesca grew up and know her sisters and brothers, cousins, etc and can picture so much of what was written. So I tried to stay objective. At times I was so angry at the medical field for not listening, over and over again, to Peggy. My heart was broken for everyone involved. I learned so much about Lewy Disease - I had only vaguely heard of it but didn't understand it. Peggy, what you have done for your Mom is so very full of love, along with the pain. Your husband deserves lots of hugs along with the many friends and relatives who helped along the way. Beautifully written, heartfelt and should be read by anyone and everyone.

Having been a caregiver for my mom who also had Lewy Body Dementia, I couldn't put this book down. Peggy's narrative is so accurate and completely relatable that she became the friend and sister that I wish I had when it was my turn. This is not only a good read but a valuable survival guide. If you THINK you have a loved one with LBD, do the research. Visit lbda.org and know the symptoms. Then buy this book, a copy of The 36 Hour Day, and a good spiral notebook, and keep them in your caregiver bag at all times. Highlight, bookmark, and take notes. Stand your ground when medical professionals dismiss your concerns. Thank you, Peggy, for re-igniting up my passion for this cause. Looking forward to the next book - or movie!

This amazing book should be read by EVERYONE to remind us of the incredibly difficult challenges that people face, seen and unseen, everyday. It should serve as a reminder, in this ambitious and impatient world, that real people are standing in every line, driving every car, sitting in every office, hospital and airport - many just trying to cope with impossible situations and caring for the people they love. I read this book in a couple of sittings. I was struck by the author's honesty and devotion to her mom. What she went through was very exasperating and her patience was tested to the breaking point, but she remained a very strong person who loved her mom. Many aging boomers have parents who are growing much older and they are in need of such love and care. This book is an inspiration.

Such an inspiration to us all, to put into words the struggles we all face and don't talk about! Once you start you will not put down until finished! Can't wait to see what Peggy writes next.

Wow, loved this story of ultimate family love, pain and commitment. One of just maybe three books that I read from cover to cover in one sitting.I loved how intimately the story is told. At times I was laughing out load then very said that it took so long and so much pain for a proper diagnosis and treatment.Highly recommend!I'd love to see it turned into a screen play.

This is a very well written book. It is a easy read story that will keep your interest because of the so many unbelievable events that take place in this caretakers journey. I could not fathom how an individual could deal with such chaos in the medical field and the pain of trying to pin point her mother's illness. You will truly enjoy this book and come out much more educated about the medical field, struggles in life and love for a mother. Highly recommend.MJ
