Pastel is a natural medium for painting the figure. It offers a delicacy of tone, color, and shading that is perfectly suited to painting the subtle nuances and glowing highlights of flesh tones and hair, and the clarity of its colors gives clothing, backgrounds, and accessories a rich, vibrant quality. In this companion volume to How to Paint Portraits in Pastel, the author gives the reader everything he or she needs to know to paint both the nude and the clothed figure in pastel. Step-by-step demonstrations by noted contemporary painters -Ramon Kelley, Marcos Blahove, Harvey Dinnerstein, Everett Raymond Kinstler, Burt Silverman, and John Foote-as well as illustrations throughout the book by other well-known artists accompany the clear, easy-to-follow text. Singer first introduces the preliminaries of pastel painting: soft pastels, hard pastels, semihard pastels, pastel pencils, and pastel in combination with other media. He reviews the various surfaces suitable for pastel and the methods for preparing these surfaces, and then describes the process of selecting pastels and laying out a palette of colors. He discusses how to plan the painting, the lighting, the background, and the various ways to pose the model. Following this, the author shows how to paint the skin and hair tones of the nude figure and the folds and patterns of the clothing on a clothed figure. He also explains how to paint the figure indoors and outdoors. The three major pastel techniques-pointillism, rubbing-in, and the painterly method- are examined in detail, and the author gives sound advice to the artist who wants to experiment in each technique. To conclude, the author offers suggestions for matting, framing, storing, and transporting the finished pastel painting. 168 pages. 81A x 11. 70 black and white illustrations. 36 full color plates. Bibliography. Index.

Without being modest, I gained enough confidence in a very short time to complete and enter my first pastel (a new medium for me) in the Pastel Society of America's annual competition in 1979. From 1,000 entries from around the U.S. and Canada, only 100 were to be selected for the exhibition and final judging. My work was ultimately accepted that year and the following year. So... if you want to explore a wonderful medium made easy to understand through the great examples given throughout the book, this is the one to get. I've collected many other pastel books throughout the years and by far have found this to be an exceptional book. The example illustrations throughout are in black and white and color, and when someone asks me for a recommendation on pastel technique I always recommend this book. The logical sequence of the chapters begins with the Introduction, including A Brief History and why to paint in pastel, including the advantages and disadvantages. Chapter 1 discusses the medium, Chapter 2 supports, Chapter 3 preparing your own own surface, and on through the use of fixatives, tools and equipments, color palettes, demonstrations, planning, the nude figure, skin and hair tones, both pointillist and painterly technique, and ultimately the final stages, which include matting, preservation, frames, handling and so on. The step-by-step demonstrations included are from Burt Silverman, Harvey Dinnerstein, Everett Raymond Kinstler, Marcos Blahove, Ramon Kelley and finally, John Foote.Definitely a keeper, add it to your collection as it is a classic, in every sense.
Lots of colored photos. Advice on equipment and set up concise and helpful. I pretty much read it cover to cover in a few days it was that good and engaging.
Very helpful. My work is improving because of this book.
Excellent condition for a book over 50 years old! Very happy with this.
Excellent information on how to paint the figure in pastels. Some of the demonstrations are a bit short. Most of the illustrations of paintings by other artists( Degas, etc.) are in black and white; 70 of them. If they were in color, the book would be much improved. There are 36 color plates.
