I generally stay away from the tactical side of the industry, because most of what I see is gimmicky nonsense, which mostly gets purchased by people who are more interested in dressing the part and feeling "tacticool" than they are in actually developing tactical proficiency. I had heard about this book many times over the years, and seen it here and there online, but always passed it over. Well, I don't remember what persuaded me to finally go ahead and actually buy the book, but I'm glad I did.I'm a generally hard person to impress, but I was genuinely impressed by the contents of this book. I'd even go so far as to say that it might very well benefit from a different title, cover image, and overall packaging demeanor.There's almost ZERO gimmicky-tacticool-nonsense in this book. Instead, there's actually SOLID knowledge and real-world insights on what to look for when assembling & configuring your weapon (AND WHY!) for various applications. There is a lot of information for people looking to improve their grip, their stance, and their weapon-manipulation skills. There's also a lot of information that, while it might not be particularly useful to the average gun guy, is still very interesting. (Ex: different ways barrels get rifled, and the advantages/disadvantages of each manufacturing technique) I should never have doubted Kyle Lamb to compile such a worth-my-money book. Mr Lamb, if you're reading this---- mybad!!This is one of the books I hand to my friends when they're looking for a new gun book to thumb through. I heartily recommend it, and happily lend it to my friends. Obviously it's no substitute for actual training, but it's far better than the vast majority of what else is out there.
If you are new to tactical firearms or just want a solid reference material for the basics you should look no further. In here you will find everything from twist rates to stances and drills, it is a wealth of knowledge. While this is not a substitute for any sort of training it should be on every gunshops shelf and Ive loaned it to many friends who are new to tactical shooting.My only gripe is that the material this book is made out of, I once got a drop of water on it and the ink smudged significantly. I would really like a more rugged copy so I can keep it in a shop or garage
This book will give you ideas to hone proficiency for realistic situations with a Black rifle. Aside from taking a hands-on 5 to 10 day course shooting thousands of rounds, this will give you many new perspectives on how to use your black rifle.I highly recommend that you find a range that allows you to use your black rifle as well as your handgun and get comfortable switching between the two. You can't horde ammunition and stay proficient; you must practice practice practice. As always, be safe. JJ
The problem with most shooting books written by current/former "operators" is that their service background alone rarely indicates marksmanship prowess, however, being generally ignorant of good shooting, the gun owning public buys off on it even though many in the special operations community are not the shooting experts that everyone assumes they are.SGM Kyle E. Lamb (ret.) is NOT one of those and represents the ideal firearms trainer, a person with field/combat experience combined with a high level of PROVEN shooting experience honed in organized competition. Search his name on Youtube. All his shooting demos have well-defined standards. If you can't beat him, then he has something for you to learn!The author discusses this in his book, Green Eyes & Black Rifles: Warrior's Guide to the Combat Carbine. Mr. Lamb has served in combat with the 5th Special Forces Group and is an active competition shooter. He states the purpose of his text thus:"This book is not for the competition minded; this book is for the shooter show hopes to use ballistic tools to eliminate a threat if the need arises. You may be a law enforcement professional, full-time military, National Guard or Reservist, tactical consultant, or instructor. You will find information here that you can use along with practical training techniques and exercises to improve your skill."So what does this Delta Force operator and trainer say about competitive shooting?"I have also been heavily involved in competition shooting with pistols, rifles, carbines, and shotguns. This competition experience has helped to make me a better rounded tactical shooter. Competition is a great place to experience shooting stresses that you might otherwise not experience until the day you become engaged. I, for one, want to feel the stress in competition, know what it is to deal with it, and learn from it. Being overcome by events in a tactical crisis is not the time to feel your first dump of adrenaline. So get out there and place yourself in an unfamiliar, stressful environment. Kyle Lamb knows his stuff. Even after carrying and using the AR/M4 platform as my primary long arm for years I learned a lot in reading this book. It an excellent read for beginers and experienced users alike. Clearly oriented to the in field, end user, this book makes for easy reading that will have you anxious to get back to the range to try out some new techniques.
