Brownstein (a clinical instructor of medicine at the University of Hawaii, Manoa) suffered multiple injuries and severe back pain for 20 years; when traditional medicines and surgery failed to help, he found relief by creating a regimen drawing on yoga, meditation, and other alternative therapies. His program is sound, and his starting point valuablerather than looking for an initiating catastrophic injury as the basis for designing treatment, chronic back pain sufferers would do better to understand their acute event as the culmination of years of stress, poor body mechanics, and possible weight and nutrition problems. His second important point is that almost all back pain originates in the muscles (rather than bone or other structures). This program is aimed, therefore at muscular fitness, principally with the extensive, progressive stretches based on yoga poses. Brownstein is careful to give appropriate cautions along the way: when to seek medical help, possible signs of serious disease. I purchased this book used in hopes of finding ideas to improve my chronic verbose andnlumbar spine pain. The author does describe some yoga poses that are helpful and discusses the dress response and it’s contribution to muscle pain and tension, but this is old information. There is some dates, and incorrect information - he states that far has no use in the body and that 20% or less of the diet should be from fat (untrue, fat is needed for hair, skin, and brain function!) and recommends full sit ups to build abdominal strength- my physical therapist would cringe if she read this. Full sit ups strain the back and are not safe for someone with DJD like myself - or really, for anyone.

I have been suffering with a herniated L3/L4 disc and compressed nerve for nearly 1 /12 years. [a worked related injury] I have been determined to help myself and meet my doctor halfway. I have always been physically active, yet knew I could do more. My pain specialist is a wonderfully skilled physician but we must, as Dr. Brownstein teaches, help ourselves. His conservative approach to healing is compelling and convincing, since he is not only a physician but has lived through back injuries, surgeries, pain and related sorrow. His intro is touching and inspiring. His narrative voice is seductive. The reader, immediately, is drawn into his story and journey through pain. I have been practicing his prescribed exercises, diet and meditation. Plan to begin Yoga, since I have an o.k. from my doctor. This is a "must" read, non-fiction work, that every back injury/pain sufferer should read. Once immersed, you will find yourself, as I have been, reading, each night and re-reading to learn. I highly recommend to anyone who has the desire to heal both spiritually and physically and maintain a healthy body and soul. I am feeling the positive effects already!

I have dealt with severe, chronic low back pain from degenerative disk disease for the past three years. Wanting to find a natural solution if possible, I tried chiropractors, physical therapy, massage, Pilates, even acupuncture. When that didn't work, I began a course of trigger point and facet joint injections that didn't help. Then I tried spinal epidurals, eventually having six of them over the course of a year. They offered some relief, but not for very long. The only things that eased the pain at all were strong prescription pain medications, and alcohol. Eventually they stopped working in safe amounts, and my memory and personality were being affected, so I scheduled surgery to have three of my vertebrae fused together. I was told I would be out of work for at least six months, if I could return at all. I'm a 55 year old man who is used to hiking, kayaking, skiing and scuba diving with my wife and three kids. My family was getting used to doing things without me because even the weight of carrying a book hurt my back so much. This surgery meant I would probably never be able to do any of that again, and would certainly have to have at least one more surgery to fuse more vertebrae in a few years. Then someone recommended this book. I was hugely skeptical, but anything was better than the surgery. I identified with everything Dr. Brownstein said in the beginning of the book, and he explained some things the doctors I consulted had not been able to explain. I vowed to stick with it for a month, just in case it worked, but I had very low expectations. There were times when I got down on the floor to do the exercises and didn't think I would be able to get up again without help. Within three weeks, however, almost all the pain was gone, and it is still improving. I have been given my life back. My family can't believe the improvement, and now makes sure I do the exercises on a daily basis. I have already given the book to three people who saw the incredible improvement in my back. If you are experiencing the same kind of back pain I was, you have nothing to lose, and everything to gain. You can get your health and your life back, like I did.

I've read several books on back pain and this has been the best by far. Brownstein takes a truly holistic approach to dealing with back issues. He stresses the need for basic rehabilitation exercises (mainly stretches) but also stresses the need for "mind" issues, such as relaxation techniques. It's a wonderful blend of approaches, and it really struck a chord with me. Best of all, it does work! I've made very good progress in dealing with sciatica pain, and have a far more positive outlook than before.The writing is clear and direct. The book begins with the basics of spinal structure, muscle groups and how everything works together. Nothing groundbreaking here, but nicely structured. Enough detail to get the key points across without burying the reader with too much detail and anatomy lessons.The section on stretching is excellent and alone worth the cost of the book. Again, nothing novel or outlandish - just basic stretching routines (several of which I was familiar with from my physical therapist, but quite a few new ones as well). The book brings value to the process by explaining each stretch clearly (both what to do and not to do) and proving illustrations. The combination of text and illustrations made it much easier for me to follow than other books that stressed one format over another.There's much more to the book, including relaxation exercises, tips on a proper diet, maintaining a healthy back, and a wonderful (but brief) chapter on what to do in a back emergency. If you have back pain, this is absolutely worth reading and trying.
