Molly Murphy along with Maisie Dobbs, by Jacqueline Winspear are the most fascinating female crime solvers in the present novel marketing. Of course, Victoria Thompson's Sarah Brandt must be included on the A list. The element that sets Molly apart is her independence and ability to apply critical thinking. Although now a wife (and in that era of our history, considered a second class citizen), and a mother, she continues to use her intelligence and courage.There are several points that define the character and make her not only endearing, but also inspirational. First,when her counterparts on the police force can only follow protocol, Molly is capable of thinking outside the box to further the findings. Secondly, her fierce loyalty to family and friends is unmatched and usually serves her well in the attempt to solve the case. Then, Molly has the common sense and bravery necessary to outwit and out-manuever her aggressive opponents. And finally, she achieves her goal with dignity and a rather matter-of-fact demeanor that defies anything boastful.Rhys Bowen, please to not let Molly go, but continue regaling us with her adventures. She is a true delight.
This is a clever, entertaining series that successfully makes the reader feel immersed in the time period and setting. However, Daniel Sullivan is the least likeable, least sympathetic character I have come across in a while. I hate him and not in a “love to hate†kind of way. It is easy to dismiss this as a modern female’s natural distaste for our previous generations’ lack of status and rights—and sure, that may be partially to blame. But still. As portrayed, he has absolutely no redeeming qualities, other than say, being employed and not a mass murderer. Throughout the series, he has been nothing but a big, whiny, insensitive baby who seems to serve no purpose other than to show up for a few obligatory scenes where he behaves unpleasantly to everyone. I say either kill him or give him some smidgen of appeal to make him believable as a man worthy of Molly.
I enjoyed the story and being forced to consider how travel and communication have changed. Imagine traveling to Europ and not being able to convey or change plans without the benefit of texting, calling, or emailing. Imagine being charged with murder - in a foreign country - before DNA and fingerprints could exonerate you. If your travel companions failed to meet you, who would you trust to care for your infant in a pinch? A somewhat simpler time, but harder perhaps to get things done. I wish there had been more of Sid and Gus throughout. There were lots of new characters, but the interactions were shallower. But love this series and seeing the challenges for women in all social classes in the era.
When Daniel comes home for dinner one evening, he and Molly hear a crash from the front room. As they are moving to see what has happened, they hear an explosion and see a fireball. After they pick themselves up and they flee the inferno, Daniel immediately climbs back into the house to find their son and serving girl. He finds Liam alive but the young girl has died protecting him.When they discover that the bomb was probably delivered by the Italian gang which Daniel is investigating, he decides that Molly and Liam must flee the city for safety. Since her two best friend are in Paris, they pack themselves on a boat, seeking refuge there. But when they arrive in Paris, her friends have disappeared and she must solve another mystery.This is a fine piece of historical fiction and an entertaining mystery as well. It is fun when she runs across American artists in Paris--think Stein and Cassatt. Sit down and enjoy yourself.
City of Light and Darkness is another amazing chapter in the saga of Molly Murphy Sullivan. Bowen has neatly solved the problem of Molly solving crimes back in New York under the watchful eye of her husband, Daniel, who would disapprove. With her trip to Paris she is able to put all her detecting skills to use and still keep the reader conversant with her two chums from home, Gus and Sid. Molly visits Paris at a most exciting time and meets such artistic luminaries as Pablo Picasso and Mary Cassatt, all the while maintaining her life as a New York matron with a child. As always, Molly is in and out of scrapes but triumphs in the end and exposes all the "bad guys" and saves the good ones! An enjoyable read, once again, from Rhys Bowen.
I have grown tired of this series, Molly faints on a regular basis. In this story her house is blown up, so she and baby are sent to friends for safety. They were supposed to meet her at the train but we're in hiding because they think the police are looking for them even though nobody is asking for their whereabouts. They had a friend willing to hide them but I guess she wasn't a good enough friend to meet the train and get Molly and baby to safety. Molly has to search for her friends. Did I mention that when the house was blown up Daniel was knocked out, but not to worry as soon as he wakes up he is able to climb in an upstairs window check the maid to make sure she was dead, rescue the baby and then get out. I guess Molly does have a reason to faint I would too putting up with this lot. Two stars because I used to like this series.
When Molly and Daniel's home is destroyed by a bomb, Daniel decides Molly must take their son Liam and go to visit Gus and Sid to keep them safe. Despite losing her house and the thought of missing Daniel, Molly excitedly heads to Paris to spend time with her friends. There's just one problem -- they're nowhere to be found. Molly is immediately thrust into detective mode and finds herself racing to find her friends and solve a murder. This non-stop mystery is an excellent addition to the Molly Murphy series. I highly recommend it and can't wait to read the next one!
