From School Library Journal
Grade 6-10?A well-written, absorbing biography of the track legend. The author nicely balances stories about the development of Owens the athlete with details about his personal life and the struggles he faced as an African American. Of course, much of the material focuses on Owens's performance at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, where his four gold medals provided a slap in the face to Adolph Hitler and his view of Aryans as the "Master Race." Josephson also discusses the prejudice that the athlete encountered throughout most of his life in the U.S., despite his reception as a national hero. In fact, one of the strengths of this book is the strong focus that it gives to Owens's childhood in Alabama and Ohio and his years after his Olympic triumph. Extensive notes follow each chapter. A list of further reading contains mostly adult titles and some things that would be difficult to track down. The index is excellent. In reading level, this book fits nicely between David Adler's The Picture Book of Jesse Owens (Holiday, 1992) and Tony Gentry's Jesse Owens (Chelsea House, 1990), which delves more deeply into aspects of the athlete's life.?Todd Morning, Schaumburg Township Public Library, ILCopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review
"The book, which is aimed at middle-grade students, covers well-worn territory in recounting the personal triumphs of Owens on and off the field. This is a heroic story that demands to be shared with each new generation." -- Los Angeles Times, "Bookshelf For Young Readers," January 29, 1999.
