This was such a fun and informative adventure reading about an American family's move from San Diego to New Zealand! I recommend it to anyone who would like to learn about the wonders and culture of New Zealand while enjoying the many experiences encountered in this major relocation. Susan's ability to paint a picture of the rolling landscape of Masterton to the bustling city of Wellington was filled with enough detail and humor to really grasp it's greatness and diversity. Great Read!
I personally enjoyed this book since I too am one who has uprooted and moved numerous times...As the author accurately describes - every location has different customs, different mannerisms and whenever you move you find out things you never knew by just visiting. Looking forward to another book from this author.
This is an enjoyable heartfelt story of a family whose bold worldly openness takes them on a journey of transition to a new country. Leaving many things they loved behind, including many friends and a beautiful home to rejuvenate their professional lives and broaden their life experience you travel the path with them culturally and emotionally. It's a valuable insight into transitions and the beauty that comes with the discomfort. I highly recommend this book.
I learned a lot about NZ and I'm really looking forward to visiting next month. Susan is a great writer-funny and entertaining. I would and have recommended this book.
I can only assume the 6 five star reviews were written by friends of the author. I had hoped to find a book highlighting the cultural differences and day-to-day routines of the US vs. New Zealand. Instead, the book was replete with the minutiae of the author's life and a litany of criticisms of the innumerable people she interacts with whether they be her family, friends, real estate agents, children's teachers, etc. Apparently, the author feels New Zealanders really need to improve the way they express themselves (their language expressions), celebrate holidays (just not enthusiastic enough), conduct business (disreputable), and drive (rude) but then concludes that she is glad she moved there????
Such a disappointing read. I would summarize it more like : Have you ever wanted to run from your life? Rip your family away from relatives and friends? Ever want to never have to work again? Then yes, definitely, marry a checkbook, pack up your family, and move to the other sided of the world, or another planet for that matter. Just make sure you've cast a spider web to guarantee that financial security. Actually, this read would make a great 'how to land a rich and famous lifestyle' without ever having to work a day in your life aside from writing terrible books like this.
This is the warmly told story of a family that did what quite a few American families often only talk about doing--move to New Zealand. The author's love of family, good food and wine, and friendship are strengthened when she risks them all. Aside from a lovely memoir, the book could be valuable to those considering the expatriate life and, in particular, the colorful nuances of life in New Zealand. A good read! -- Stuart Grauer
A great read. Especially, if you are thinking of moving to another country or want a perspective of a family moving to 'your' country. To read about the traps along the way, funny misunderstandings, cultural differences, and styles of living is at times funny, disheartening and eye opening.
