My opinion of conservative media is not very high, to be honest. Still, I do try to maintain a somewhat balanced media diet. This means occasionally reading something from The National Review or Wall Street Journal, to name a couple. In short, I know the political positions. What I didn't know, and was the gap filled by this book, is how we got to where we are today. Hence, Fox and Rush Limbaugh are the conclusion, and generally aren't dealt with too deeply. Which is fine. Instead, I got to find out about a burgeoning, often struggling, media ecosystem that began to emerge after WWII. It was quite fascinating, to say the least, with plenty of infighting over principles versus pragmatism, kind of like now. I see this book as having a narrow readership, but if conservative media history interests you, by all means check this out.
For those Americans still mourning the loss of the scrupulously objective, scrupulously balanced news coverage back in the days of Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite in the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s . . . for those Americans still stunned by the near total takeover of AM radio by ultra-rightwing idealogues and the rise of so-called "hate radio" . . . for those Americans seeking hopelessly for a rational explanation of how and why it happened . . . this is the go-to book.In a scrupulously impartial, objective, scholarly approach -- everything that "hate radio" isn't -- the author will amaze you by tracking the origins of that right-wing takeover of AM radio way back to pre-war America in the 1940s, decades before anyone suspected it could happen.. As the author explains, it didn't just happen by chance. The author shows how it was carefully plotted and carried out by ultra-conservatives over a period of several decades. It took the ultra-conservatives almost half a century to accomplish it -- but they gradually managed to pull it off, bit by bit, with spectacular success. Although the author maintains academic objectivity, the book demonstrates that middle-of-the-road democracy is much worse off because radio station owners gave up any pretense of balance and objectivity.If you REALLY want to understand how the election of Donald Trump happened . . . if you really want to understand how ultra-conservatives finally managed to gain almost total control of the U.S. government in 2016 . . . then this book is a must-read, even though it was written before that 2016 earthquake hit..

Quick Hit –Nicole Hemmer’s debut book is a very well-written & valuable addition to the history of conservative media. The topic is scrupulously researched with nearly 600 footnotes and hundreds of sources, both primary and secondary. While one might expect such rigor to make for a slogging read, I was pleasantly surprised to discover just the opposite. I also found her treatment of the topic very balanced; quite the feat given today’s polarization, her politics, her profession & the subject matter.What this book is NOT about –• development of conservative talk-radio or Fox News (these get brief & comparatively unrigorous treatment in the book’s final chapter)• impact of conservative media on the broader arc of conservative political philosophy• conservative media’s impact on Ronald Reagan’s political successWhat this book IS about –• 1950s – mid 1970s• ‘first wave’ of men who drove conservative media (Buckley, Rusher, Manion, Regnery)• fundamental notion of objectivity / fairness in our political discourse• conservatives’ preoccupation with liberal/mainstream media bias that (surprisingly) pre-dates Fox news by decades, and also develops into a major accomplishment of the movementA quibble –The biggest complaint I have with the book is that it largely fails its subtitle – the ‘Transformation of American Politics.’ In fact, one of my bigger takeaways from the book is that this first wave of conservative media had astonishingly little impact on politics, at least at the Presidential level.Its main actors are perennially disappointed with their inability to alter primary and general election dynamics. The one demonstrable ‘win’ for conservatives in the post-war era (Reagan’s election) gets very little space in Hemmer’s treatment, and any impact from Buckley et al is relegated to Reagan’s professed fandom.A major weakness of the book in this respect is it never gives us the politicians’ side of how they were or were not impacted by the conservative media’s effort. What did Ike, Goldwater, Nixon, Reagan and their advisors do differently because of conservative media? We’re left to conclude the answer is either ‘very little’ or we need to read another book to find out.In sum –A worthwhile & enjoyable read if you’re cognizant of what you are (and aren’t) getting.

In the past six months I've read a few books on crisis management and this is my favorite. Coombs put together a concise book that is well organized, easy to read, and brimming with useful information. He used the three-phase (pre-crisis, crisis, post-crisis) model as a foundation after comparing it with other more robust models.Because this was published recently (2012), the examples were current and memorable. As much as I dig the Tylenol/cyanide case study, it's nice to learn from events that have happened in the past few years.I originally purchased this as a required text for graduate school but have used it as much, if not more, at work in building a crisis management plan from scratch. For someone who needs a grip on the basics, this is an appropriate tool. For a person with extensive crisis management experience, it may fall short of expectations.
No ground-breaking info here, but a good manual to have for anyone needing to develop a crisis communication plan. Good case studies augment the content, which focuses on a three-staged approach to crisis management (precrisis, crisis and postcrisis). Author Dr. Timothy Coombs also provides content on the emerging influence and challenge of social media and social networking sites. A must read for every crisis management or public relations professional.
This book was a great book for information on crisis management which I had to do a presentation on. It was neatly organized and super understandable. It was easy to read not like some text books! I think this would be a great book for teaching students!!

Better than nothing, but the orthography is pretty flawed (why the French "dj" instead of just "j" for words like "jang?"), and there are a lot of combinations of words and emphasis/lexical markers. For example, "moile" (I would prefer "moy le") combines the verb moy/moi with the emphasis marker "le," which isn't strictly necessary. This, from the perspective of an English language speaker, could be confusing. Note: I served in The Gambia as a Peace Corps volunteer and now work as a translator/mediator for Mandinka speakers in a school district in the U.S.
