To me the greatest food on earth is real cajun food. My Grandmother taught me how to make gumbo using a piggly wiggly brown paper bag to gauge the color of the roux. Book is clearly written and has some good tips as well as recipes. Besides I like this guy--he is kind.

Every recipe I have made has been top notch. Most recent one was Cornish Hens with Aunt Dorothy’s stuffing and Dirty Rice. Just great.....

My opinion of conservative media is not very high, to be honest. Still, I do try to maintain a somewhat balanced media diet. This means occasionally reading something from The National Review or Wall Street Journal, to name a couple. In short, I know the political positions. What I didn't know, and was the gap filled by this book, is how we got to where we are today. Hence, Fox and Rush Limbaugh are the conclusion, and generally aren't dealt with too deeply. Which is fine. Instead, I got to find out about a burgeoning, often struggling, media ecosystem that began to emerge after WWII. It was quite fascinating, to say the least, with plenty of infighting over principles versus pragmatism, kind of like now. I see this book as having a narrow readership, but if conservative media history interests you, by all means check this out.

For those Americans still mourning the loss of the scrupulously objective, scrupulously balanced news coverage back in the days of Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite in the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s . . . for those Americans still stunned by the near total takeover of AM radio by ultra-rightwing idealogues and the rise of so-called "hate radio" . . . for those Americans seeking hopelessly for a rational explanation of how and why it happened . . . this is the go-to book.In a scrupulously impartial, objective, scholarly approach -- everything that "hate radio" isn't -- the author will amaze you by tracking the origins of that right-wing takeover of AM radio way back to pre-war America in the 1940s, decades before anyone suspected it could happen.. As the author explains, it didn't just happen by chance. The author shows how it was carefully plotted and carried out by ultra-conservatives over a period of several decades. It took the ultra-conservatives almost half a century to accomplish it -- but they gradually managed to pull it off, bit by bit, with spectacular success. Although the author maintains academic objectivity, the book demonstrates that middle-of-the-road democracy is much worse off because radio station owners gave up any pretense of balance and objectivity.If you REALLY want to understand how the election of Donald Trump happened . . . if you really want to understand how ultra-conservatives finally managed to gain almost total control of the U.S. government in 2016 . . . then this book is a must-read, even though it was written before that 2016 earthquake hit..

The topic is scrupulously researched with nearly 600 footnotes and hundreds of sources, both primary and secondary. While one might expect such rigor to make for a slogging read, I was pleasantly surprised to discover just the opposite. I also found her treatment of the topic very balanced; quite the feat given today’s polarization, her politics, her profession & the subject matter.What this book is NOT about –• development of conservative talk-radio or Fox News (these get brief & comparatively unrigorous treatment in the book’s final chapter)• impact of conservative media on the broader arc of conservative political philosophy• conservative media’s impact on Ronald Reagan’s political successWhat this book IS about –• 1950s – mid 1970s• ‘first wave’ of men who drove conservative media (Buckley, Rusher, Manion, Regnery)• fundamental notion of objectivity / fairness in our political discourse• conservatives’ preoccupation with liberal/mainstream media bias that (surprisingly) pre-dates Fox news by decades, and also develops into a major accomplishment of the movementA quibble –The biggest complaint I have with the book is that it largely fails its subtitle – the ‘Transformation of American Politics.’ In fact, one of my bigger takeaways from the book is that this first wave of conservative media had astonishingly little impact on politics, at least at the Presidential level.Its main actors are perennially disappointed with their inability to alter primary and general election dynamics. The one demonstrable ‘win’ for conservatives in the post-war era (Reagan’s election) gets very little space in Hemmer’s treatment, and any impact from Buckley et al is relegated to Reagan’s professed fandom.A major weakness of the book in this respect is it never gives us the politicians’ side of how they were or were not impacted by the conservative media’s effort. What did Ike, Goldwater, Nixon, Reagan and their advisors do differently because of conservative media? We’re left to conclude the answer is either ‘very little’ or we need to read another book to find out.In sum –A worthwhile & enjoyable read if you’re cognizant of what you are (and aren’t) getting.

Difficult to read...this book must be interpreted to understand material.

As a pastor I find myself turning to this volume often when in the Psalms. Kraus studies the Psalter thematically, which is a bit tiresome when studying a single Psalm, but nonetheless, so valuable in his grouping together of concepts, words, phrases, etc. Although there surface periodically (but not frequently) touches of historicial-critical methodology and findings, this volume represents some of the finest theology work on the OT Hymnal. He even includes a fine expose on the NT use of Psalms. Not sure how the average layperson without any Hebrew knowledge would find this work, but certainly, there is meat here for them to find and devour smilingly.

Dubbed one of the best spiritual books of the 20th century and lavishly praised by renowned figures such as Andrew Weil, George Harrison, and Steve Jobs (apparently this book was the "party favor" at his funeral), curiosity got the best of me and I committed to reading it.I cannot see why this book has such a glowingly positive reputation. I'm not against its ultimate message, yet it uses simple-minded stories akin to medieval miracle tales to keep the reader's attention. Immortal yogis, magical materializations, transporting people to far lands in the blink of an eye, bringing people back from the dead, and more may have cut it 3000 years ago, maybe 1000 years ago, maybe even in the early 20th century when this book was written and large groups of people were still relatively naive. But in the 21st century we have clear demarcations between the real and the fictive, and we have standards of proof that help us clearly distinguish between the two. I consider myself open-minded but do not for one second believe that half of what is in this book has any literal truth, and it's insulting that the author expects us to swallow his tall tales.The book does have value as a mythological text, and it's always interesting to enter into a religion from the perspective of a devotee and to see beliefs as a living worldview. It contains some basic spiritual wisdom, but nothing that you can't find in a thousand other, more honest, works on spirituality.I've read criticisms that the outlandish claims in the book are a cheap commercial ploy to attract people to join the Yogi's cult organization, The Self-Realization Fellowship, and after reading I tend to agree. The book attempts to sell Kriya Yoga as a shortcut for salvation throughout, and there's even a tacky sign-up sheet inserted into the middle of the book. No thanks.

I first read this book when I was twenty or so ( I'm now reaching seventy ). immediately after completing the book, I applied for the lessons and continued expanding my spirituality through the meditation and other techniques expounded in the lessons. I then applied for my kriya initiation and became a kriyaban. In all this I saw my life change subtly. My anchor became God, and the ups and downs of normal life no longer worried me. Life became one beautiful magic show; everyday being a new thrilling experience. I am in a state now where I would not trade my present condition for all the money in the world - and it was all started by this book. Yogananda used to say that this book wil be his ambassador after he is gone - and how true that has become. Spiritual classics like this book are written at several levels. A person reading this book for the first time, if his consciousness is not advanced , will understand some parts of the book very differently from a person who has been on the spiritual path for awhile and has a greatly expanded consciousness . After my first reading of this book, I did not read it anymore, as I was busy with the lessons and meditation. Just last week, I took out my old battered copy of the Autobiography and flipped through its pages, stopping every now and then to read some passage. I found that I could understand each of these passages at their deepest level. As predicted by many, this book will bring about a spiritual revolution to our world, when people will finally concentrate on the spiritual essence of a religion rather than the insignificant details of the various religions that tend to separate man from man.

It's hard to give this book less than 5 stars because I highly recommend it and it can completely change your life. I originally read the version with the blue cover which I found out later is apparently the one that wasn't edited after Yogananda's death. Many years later I repurchased this red cover version because it came with the free CD and I figured.. how different can it be? Well, it is very different. The pictures are different. It has more recent pictures of what is apparently the newer leaders of SRF after Yogananda's death. Some of the amazing older pics from the original book were removed which is just heartbreaking for me. I can tell it just isn't the same vibration. I wasn't getting the same feel. So a few days into it, I put the book down and just bit the bullet, got over my penny pinching self, and re-ordered the blue version. I would say, if you are interested more in the SRF organization, buy this one. If you want the more original version that Yogananda himself wrote, get the blue one. The blue version is also free online, I downloaded it, but nothing like having a book in your hands. Especially one that has a healing vibrational quality to it.

For anyone interested in spirituality, this is a fantastic book. I admit I was slow to believe in much of what I read in this book, but over the next few years after its purchase, it wound up changing my life beyond measure. I own a great many books on religion and spirituality, but this one will always hold a special place in my heart and in my life. I highly recommend this book; and for the first and only time on Amazon, I would give this item more than 5 stars if I could.

W. Timothy Coombs, Ph.D., Purdue University, is the Abell Professor in Liberal Arts in Department of Communication at Texas A&M University. In the past six months I've read a few books on crisis management and this is my favorite. Coombs put together a concise book that is well organized, easy to read, and brimming with useful information. He used the three-phase (pre-crisis, crisis, post-crisis) model as a foundation after comparing it with other more robust models.Because this was published recently (2012), the examples were current and memorable. As much as I dig the Tylenol/cyanide case study, it's nice to learn from events that have happened in the past few years.I originally purchased this as a required text for graduate school but have used it as much, if not more, at work in building a crisis management plan from scratch. For someone who needs a grip on the basics, this is an appropriate tool. For a person with extensive crisis management experience, it may fall short of expectations.

No ground-breaking info here, but a good manual to have for anyone needing to develop a crisis communication plan. Good case studies augment the content, which focuses on a three-staged approach to crisis management (precrisis, crisis and postcrisis). Author Dr. Timothy Coombs also provides content on the emerging influence and challenge of social media and social networking sites. A must read for every crisis management or public relations professional.

This book was a great book for information on crisis management which I had to do a presentation on. It was neatly organized and super understandable. It was easy to read not like some text books! I think this would be a great book for teaching students!!

I bought this for a graduate school course, and I recommend it. This has been one of my favorite classes.

Better than nothing, but the orthography is pretty flawed (why the French "dj" instead of just "j" for words like "jang?"), and there are a lot of combinations of words and emphasis/lexical markers. For example, "moile" (I would prefer "moy le") combines the verb moy/moi with the emphasis marker "le," which isn't strictly necessary. This, from the perspective of an English language speaker, could be confusing. Note: I served in The Gambia as a Peace Corps volunteer and now work as a translator/mediator for Mandinka speakers in a school district in the U.S.
